Italy won the men's team pursuit speed-skating gold medal at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
The Italian trio of Enrico Fabris, Matteo Anesi and Ippolito Sanfratello defeated Canada in the final. Italy's winning time was 3 minutes 44.57 seconds, while Canada finished in 3:45.22. The Netherlands won bronze.
Team pursuit was making its Olympic debut at Turin. Teams race over eight laps, with three skaters starting together; the time is taken when the second skater crosses the finish line. This makes drafting, pacing and formation discipline essential.
Fabris was the central figure in Italy's speed-skating success at the Games. He also won individual gold medals in the 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres, making the team-pursuit victory part of a highly successful home Olympics.
