Which studio developed the Sega Genesis version of John Madden Football? Park Place Productions developed it.
Electronic Arts hired Park Place Productions in early 1990 to create the Genesis adaptation. EA was also working on Joe Montana Football, so outsourcing Madden helped the company produce a console version quickly. Park Place had experience with action-oriented sports games, including ABC Monday Night Football, and its design emphasized fast, arcade-like play while retaining Madden's recognizable overhead 3D field.
The game launched in 1990 and became a major Genesis success. EA had expected roughly 75,000 sales but the title sold about 400,000 copies, helping establish Madden as a console phenomenon and contributing to the Genesis's competitive position against the Super Nintendo. It is sometimes labeled Madden '90 or Madden '91 to distinguish it from later releases.
A common mix-up is confusing Park Place with BlueSky Software, which developed later Joe Montana sequels, or with Visual Concepts and Tiburon, studios associated with later Madden projects. Park Place also developed the Genesis follow-up John Madden Football '92.
