Which studio developed Super Smash Bros. Melee?

The story behind the answer

Which studio developed Super Smash Bros. Melee? HAL Laboratory.

Super Smash Bros. Melee was developed by HAL Laboratory, the Japanese studio known for series such as Kirby. Masahiro Sakurai directed the project, while Nintendo published it for the GameCube. HAL had also developed the original Super Smash Bros., so Melee continued the series' core development relationship rather than moving to one of the studios listed as distractors.

Melee was released in Japan on November 21, 2001, followed by North America on December 3, 2001. Its development took roughly 13 months, an unusually demanding schedule for a game that expanded the roster, stages, modes, and visual presentation substantially beyond its Nintendo 64 predecessor.

A frequent mix-up is confusing developer, publisher, and associated creators. Nintendo published the game, but HAL Laboratory developed it. Sora Ltd. later became associated with the series through Sakurai, while Intelligent Systems and Game Freak are separate Nintendo-related studios and were not Melee's developer.
