Which stat determines the number of spell slots in Dark Souls?

The story behind the answer

In Dark Souls, Attunement determines how many spell slots a character has.

Spell slots are the spaces used to equip prepared sorceries, miracles, and pyromancies. Raising Attunement increases the number of available slots at specific thresholds, allowing a character to carry more prepared spells. The stat also increases the character’s maximum focus points, the resource consumed by spells.

Attunement does not by itself determine every aspect of spell performance. Intelligence is the main casting attribute for sorceries, Faith is central to miracles, and pyromancy damage is tied largely to the Pyromancy Flame’s upgrade level. Those distinctions matter when building a character focused on a particular magical discipline.

The term is easy to confuse with “attunement slots” in other games, where the exact progression may differ. In Dark Souls, players must also meet a spell’s attribute requirements and acquire or find the spell before it can be attuned at a bonfire.
