In Dark Souls, how many rings can a character equip at the same time?

The story behind the answer

In Dark Souls, a character can equip two rings at the same time.

Rings are equipment items that grant passive effects, such as increased health, stronger spell power, improved stamina recovery, or protection from environmental hazards. The two ring slots let players combine effects, but each choice involves a trade-off because equipping one ring prevents the use of another in that slot.

Some rings are especially important for particular areas or builds. The Orange Charred Ring reduces lava damage, while Havel’s Ring increases maximum equipment burden. The Covenant of Artorias is required to survive the Abyss during the Four Kings encounter. Players may own many rings and can change them from the equipment menu, but only two can be active simultaneously. This limitation is distinct from armor slots and weapon slots, and it remains one of the simple rules that gives Dark Souls’ equipment system much of its strategic character.
