Which sport combines ski jumping with cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Nordic combined combines ski jumping with cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics.

Competitors first earn points in a ski-jumping competition. They then start a cross-country race using the Gundersen method, in which the jump results determine time gaps at the start. The first athlete across the finish line wins the event.

The sport is called “Nordic combined” because it joins two traditional Nordic disciplines. It has been on the Winter Olympic programme since the first Winter Games at Chamonix in 1924.

Nordic combined is distinct from the biathlon. Biathletes combine cross-country skiing with rifle shooting, while Nordic combined athletes combine jumping with cross-country skiing. As of the 2022 Winter Olympics, Nordic combined remained a men’s-only Olympic sport.
