Which speed skater won three gold medals at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Yvonne van Gennip won three gold medals in speed skating at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

The Dutch skater triumphed in the women’s 3,000 metres, 5,000 metres, and 1,500 metres. Her victories were especially notable because she had been recovering from an ankle injury before the Games and was not widely regarded as the leading favorite in every event.

Van Gennip’s 5,000-metre victory was a major upset over East German skater Gunda Niemann, who was expected to dominate the longer distances. Van Gennip also set world records in both the 3,000-metre and 5,000-metre races at Calgary. Her three individual golds made her one of the most successful athletes of those Games.

She did not win the 1,500 metres by defeating Bonnie Blair, the American who won the 500 and 1,000 metres. That distinction helps separate van Gennip’s achievement from Blair’s sprinting success. Van Gennip retired from competitive skating after the 1992 Albertville Olympics.
