Yevgeny Grishin won both the 500 metres and 1,500 metres at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics.
The Soviet speed skater successfully defended his 500-metre title from Cortina d'Ampezzo and added the 1,500-metre gold in California. His 500-metre victory was especially notable because he shared the gold medal with Canada's Bill Disney after both skaters recorded the same time.
Grishin had already won two gold medals at the 1956 Winter Olympics. His four Olympic golds made him one of the leading speed skaters of the 1950s and early 1960s.
The Squaw Valley Games were the first Winter Olympics held in the United States since 1932. They also introduced several major organisational changes, including an athletes' village and the use of artificial ice for speed skating.
