Which soccer manager led the AC Milan team to two European Cups in 1989 and 1990?
Answer
Arrigo Sacchi
Answer
Arrigo Sacchi
Arrigo Sacchi led AC Milan to European Cup victories in 1989 and 1990.
Sacchi’s Milan won the 1988–89 European Cup by defeating Steaua București 4–0 in the final in Barcelona. One year later, Milan defended the trophy with a 1–0 victory over Benfica in Vienna. Those back-to-back triumphs made the team one of the defining sides of the era.
Sacchi’s influence went beyond the trophies. His Milan became famous for an aggressive, coordinated pressing system, a compact defensive line and an offside trap that required exceptional teamwork. The squad also featured the Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard, alongside defenders such as Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini.
A common mix-up is Fabio Capello, who later coached Milan to the 1994 Champions League title. Carlo Ancelotti also became a highly successful Milan coach, but he did not lead the club to the 1989 or 1990 European Cups. The competition was still called the European Cup; it was renamed the UEFA Champions League in 1992.
