Jon Cooper led the Tampa Bay Lightning to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
Cooper became Tampa Bay’s head coach in March 2013 and guided the franchise to its first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2015. The Lightning lost that series, but Cooper’s team later broke through by defeating the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Final, played in a pandemic-created Edmonton bubble.
In 2021, Tampa Bay repeated as champion by defeating the Montreal Canadiens in five games. The Lightning became the first team to win consecutive Stanley Cups since the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. Cooper therefore coached both title-winning campaigns, not merely one of them.
A common mix-up is confusing Cooper with opposing coaches. Dallas was coached by Rick Bowness in the 2020 Final, while Montreal was coached by Dominique Ducharme in 2021.
