J.K. Rowling received a screenwriter credit for the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The film was written by Rowling and directed by David Yates. It expands the wizarding world beyond Harry Potter by following magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1920s New York City, decades before Harry’s time.
The screenplay was inspired by the fictional Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which Rowling originally published as a charity companion book in 2001. The film therefore uses the same title but tells a new story rather than adapting that short textbook.
Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander. The film became the first installment of a planned Fantastic Beasts film series and earned an Academy Award for costume design.
