Which screenplay by J.K. Rowling was released as a 2016 film?

The story behind the answer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the J.K. Rowling screenplay released as a film in 2016. It was her screenwriting debut and expanded the wizarding world beyond Harry Potter’s school story.

The film is set in 1926 and follows Newt Scamander, a British wizard and magizoologist, in New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, while the story introduces magical institutions and characters from an earlier period of wizarding history. Rowling also wrote the screenplay’s sequel films.

The title comes from a fictional Hogwarts textbook first mentioned in Harry Potter. Rowling published a charity companion book under the same title in 2001, but that small book is not the same work as the 2016 screenplay and film. The sequel is titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, so the shorter first title should not be confused with the later films.
