Which Scottish city hosted the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games?
Answer
Edinburgh
Answer
Edinburgh
The Scottish city that hosted the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games was Edinburgh.
Edinburgh hosted the Commonwealth Games twice, first from 16 to 25 July 1970 and again from 24 July to 2 August 1986. The two editions made it the first Scottish city—and, before Glasgow’s later hosting roles—to stage the Games more than once.
The 1970 Games were widely regarded as successful and popular. The 1986 edition was more controversial: 32 eligible nations boycotted it, largely in protest against Britain’s sporting links with apartheid-era South Africa. Despite the reduced participation, the event went ahead at venues including Meadowbank Stadium.
Glasgow hosted Scotland’s next Commonwealth Games in 2014 and again in 2026. Dundee and Aberdeen have not hosted the Commonwealth Games, while Glasgow’s appearances should not be confused with Edinburgh’s two earlier editions.
