Glasgow 2026 is the first Commonwealth Games since which person became CGF president?

The story behind the answer

Glasgow 2026 is the first Commonwealth Games since which person became CGF president? It is the first since Donald Rukare became president.

Rukare, a Ugandan lawyer and sports administrator, was elected president of Commonwealth Sport at the organisation’s General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025. Commonwealth Sport was the organisation’s new name after it transitioned from the Commonwealth Games Federation, or CGF.

Before his election, Rukare served as interim president during 2025 following the resignation of Chris Jenkins. His appointment made him the first African president of the Commonwealth sports movement. He previously held senior roles in Ugandan sport, including leadership of the Uganda Olympic Committee and Uganda’s National Council of Sports.

The wording can cause confusion because the organisation was called the CGF when Rukare first took the interim role, but Commonwealth Sport was adopted as the new identity in 2025. Louise Martin was the previous elected president, while Katie Sadleir is the chief executive officer.
