John Swinney is the First Minister pictured at the formal Glasgow 2026 launch in October 2024.
Swinney became Scotland’s First Minister in May 2024, succeeding Humza Yousaf. That made him the Scottish Government’s head when Glasgow’s plans for the 2026 Commonwealth Games were formally presented later that year. The launch took place in Glasgow on 22 October 2024.
The timing helps separate Swinney from the other names in the options. Alex Salmond was First Minister from 2007 to 2014, Nicola Sturgeon held the office from 2014 to 2023, and Humza Yousaf served from 2023 until May 2024. None was First Minister at the October 2024 launch.
Swinney’s appearance also reflects the Games’ Scottish setting. Glasgow was selected after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as the original 2026 host because of escalating projected costs. Scotland’s compact plan relies heavily on existing venues and the city’s experience from hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
