Glasgow 2026's revived mile event pays homage to the 1954 Miracle Mile in which Canadian city?

The story behind the answer

Glasgow 2026’s revived mile event pays homage to the 1954 Miracle Mile in Vancouver, Canada.

The famous race took place at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver’s Empire Stadium. England’s Roger Bannister and Australia’s John Landy, the first two men to break the four-minute mile, met in the same race. Bannister won in 3:58.8, with Landy second in 3:59.6.

Because two sub-four-minute milers competed head-to-head for the first time, the contest became known as the Miracle Mile. It followed Bannister’s historic first sub-four-minute mile in Oxford in May 1954 and Landy’s own breakthrough shortly afterward, turning the Vancouver race into one of athletics’ defining moments.

The mile later disappeared from the Commonwealth Games programme after its final appearance at Kingston 1966, replaced by the metric 1,500 metres. Glasgow 2026 revived it as a special tribute, connecting a modern event with Vancouver’s landmark sporting history.
