Which record label released Bob Marley's first single 'Judge Not'?

The story behind the answer

Beverley’s released Bob Marley’s first single, “Judge Not.” Issued in Jamaica in 1962, the recording marked the beginning of Marley’s professional recording career, years before he became an international reggae star with the Wailers. The song was produced by Leslie Kong, a major Jamaican producer who operated the Beverley’s label and recording business.

“Judge Not” was stylistically different from the roots-reggae sound most associated with Marley. It leaned toward the ska and early Jamaican popular-music styles of the period, with lyrics urging listeners not to condemn others. Marley recorded it when he was still a teenager, making the single an important early glimpse of the songwriter he would become.

The label is sometimes confused with Studio One, which later became closely associated with early Wailers recordings, or with Tuff Gong, the label Marley and the Wailers established in the 1970s. Trojan was a British label that helped distribute Jamaican music internationally, but it did not release Marley’s original first single. Beverley’s is therefore the specific answer for “Judge Not.”
