Time named Exodus the best album of the 20th century in 1999.
Exodus was Bob Marley and the Wailers’ ninth studio album, first released in June 1977 through Island Records. The band recorded much of it in London after Marley left Jamaica following the 1976 assassination attempt, and the album combined spiritual reflection, political consciousness and broadly accessible reggae.
Its track list includes “Jamming,” “Waiting in Vain,” “Three Little Birds,” “One Love/People Get Ready” and the title track. Those songs helped make Exodus one of Marley’s defining albums, although it did not top the US chart: it peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. The Time accolade is sometimes confused with later rankings by Rolling Stone or VH1, but it specifically refers to Time’s 1999 “Best of the Century” selection.
