What Ethiopian Orthodox baptismal name did Bob Marley receive in 1980?
Answer
Berhane Selassie
Answer
Berhane Selassie
Bob Marley received the Ethiopian Orthodox baptismal name Berhane Selassie in 1980.
Although Marley was long associated with Rastafari and regarded Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia as a sacred figure, he was baptized into Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity late in life. Archbishop Abuna Yesehaq performed the baptism on 4 November 1980, with Marley’s wife Rita and their children present.
Berhane Selassie is therefore the baptismal name, while Abuna Yesehaq was the archbishop who administered the ceremony. Menelik II and Tafari Makonnen are also names connected to Ethiopian history: Menelik II was an Ethiopian emperor, and Tafari Makonnen was Haile Selassie’s name before his imperial title. Marley died only about six months later, on 11 May 1981, making the baptism one of the final major religious events of his life.
