J.K. Rowling is credited with completing Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Edinburgh.
Rowling moved to Edinburgh in 1993 with her daughter Jessica after leaving Portugal. She continued writing the manuscript there, often working in cafés while caring for her young child. Edinburgh became closely associated with the completion and publication journey of the first Harry Potter novel.
The city’s role is sometimes confused with the origin of the idea. Rowling has said that the initial concept came to her during a delayed train journey from Manchester to London in 1990, while she began writing in Portugal. Edinburgh was the later setting where the first novel was completed.
Edinburgh’s literary reputation and architecture have also encouraged connections between the city and the atmosphere of the wizarding world. However, Hogwarts is fictional and is not officially located in Edinburgh. The city’s importance here concerns Rowling’s writing history, not the invented geography of the novels.
