Which real-life railway station inspired J.K. Rowling’s fictional King’s Cross setting?

The story behind the answer

London’s King’s Cross station inspired J.K. Rowling’s fictional King’s Cross setting.

In the Harry Potter books, Platform 9¾ is the hidden departure point for the Hogwarts Express. Rowling chose King’s Cross because it was associated with her parents’ journey and because the station provided a fitting gateway from ordinary London to the wizarding world.

The actual station does not have a normal platform 9¾ between platforms 9 and 10. In the real layout, the relevant tracks are separated by railway lines. The books transform the familiar station into a magical threshold concealed from Muggles.

A platform-themed luggage trolley and sign became a popular visitor attraction at King’s Cross. The Harry Potter films also used the station and its surrounding locations, strengthening the connection between the fictional place and the real London landmark.
