Nicolas Flamel appears as a character in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Flamel is described as the creator of the Philosopher’s Stone, an object capable of producing the Elixir of Life. His long life helps drive the mystery surrounding the stone, which Harry and his friends protect from Lord Voldemort’s attempt to regain power.
Flamel was also a real French scribe and manuscript seller who lived in the 14th and 15th centuries. Later legends falsely credited him with alchemical discoveries and immortality. Rowling used that existing legend as part of the book’s magical history, while the series’ events and wizarding interpretation are fictional. The character therefore connects a documented historical name with a fantasy plot.
