Which railway station inspired the fictional Platform 9¾ in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

King’s Cross Station inspired the fictional Platform 9¾ in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

In the books, Hogwarts students reach the magical platform at London’s King’s Cross Station before boarding the Hogwarts Express. The platform is hidden between platforms 9 and 10, and students pass through a barrier to reach it. The precise platform arrangement in the real station differs from the fictional description.

King’s Cross became a major Harry Potter visitor site. A luggage trolley displayed as passing through a wall was installed near the station’s retail area, allowing visitors to pose as though entering Platform 9¾. The Harry Potter Shop at Platform 9¾ is also located there.

The neighboring station St Pancras International is often mistaken for the relevant location because its distinctive Victorian exterior appears in Harry Potter film scenes. The fictional train-platform idea, however, is associated with King’s Cross.
