Which player was the first to win the Brownlow Medal three times?

The story behind the answer

Haydn Bunton Sr was the first player to win the Brownlow Medal three times.

Bunton won the Brownlow Medal in 1931, 1932, and 1935 while playing for Fitzroy. His three victories made him the first three-time winner of the award, which recognises the fairest and best player in the VFL home-and-away season.

He was an exceptional rover known for his pace, ball control, and skill. Bunton also won the Sandover Medal in Western Australia after moving to Fremantle, making him one of the few players to win major best-and-fairest awards in two states.

His record is sometimes confused with the later three-time winners Dick Reynolds and Bob Skilton. Bunton’s three Brownlow victories came first, all before World War II.
