Which player kicked nine goals for Geelong in the 1989 VFL Grand Final?
Answer
Gary Ablett Sr
Answer
Gary Ablett Sr
Gary Ablett Sr kicked nine goals for Geelong in the 1989 VFL Grand Final.
Ablett’s nine goals were the most ever kicked by an individual player in a VFL or AFL Grand Final. He produced the remarkable performance despite Geelong losing to Hawthorn by six points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Ablett was one of the most explosive forwards in VFL history. His combination of pace, power, aerial ability, and accurate kicking made him a major threat throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.
The record is often mixed up with Jason Dunstall’s eight goals for Hawthorn in the same match. Dunstall’s total was also exceptional, but Ablett finished with the higher individual tally in the famous 1989 decider.
