Which player holds the VFL/AFL career goal-scoring record?
Answer
Tony Lockett
Answer
Tony Lockett
Tony Lockett holds the VFL/AFL career goal-scoring record with 1,360 goals.
Lockett, nicknamed “Plugger,” played 281 senior matches between 1983 and 1999. He began his VFL career with St Kilda before moving to the Sydney Swans, where he became one of the competition’s most recognisable forwards.
His total surpassed the previous record of 1,299 goals held by Gordon Coventry. Lockett’s record is especially notable because he played in an era when forwards faced strong physical pressure and defensive tactics designed to restrict marking opportunities.
Lockett also holds the record for the most goals in a single AFL/VFL match, kicking 16 for St Kilda against Sydney in 1989. His career total is separate from the record for goals in one season, which has changed hands among several legendary forwards.
