Which player has played the most VFL/AFL senior games?

The story behind the answer

Brent Harvey holds the record for most VFL/AFL senior games, playing 432 matches for North Melbourne.

Harvey debuted for North Melbourne in 1996 and remained with the club throughout his career. A small, quick midfielder and forward, he became known as “Boomer” and was one of the competition’s most durable players.

His 432-game total passed Michael Tuck’s previous record of 426 appearances. Harvey reached the record in 2016, his final AFL season, after more than two decades at senior level. He also played in North Melbourne’s 1999 premiership team.

The record counts official VFL/AFL senior matches, rather than reserves, representative or junior games. Harvey’s total is therefore different from records for most games at one club in other competitions or for most finals appearances.
