Which Pixar feature film number is Cars in the studio’s release order?

The story behind the answer

Cars is Pixar’s seventh feature film in the studio’s release order.

Pixar’s first seven feature films were Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars. Cars arrived in 2006, after The Incredibles in 2004 and before Ratatouille in 2007.

The film marked another expansion of Pixar’s storytelling range. Earlier Pixar features focused on toys, insects, monsters, fish, and superheroes; Cars centered on anthropomorphic vehicles and an American road culture setting. The studio created extensive digital environments to portray racing tracks, highways, desert landscapes, and Radiator Springs.

Cars is sometimes mistakenly counted as Pixar’s sixth film because people overlook The Incredibles or count release years rather than individual features. Pixar’s short films and television productions are not included in this feature-film ranking.
