The organization founded by J.K. Rowling that was originally called the Children’s High Level Group is Lumos.
Rowling became president of the Children’s High Level Group after helping launch it in 2005. The organization worked to improve the lives of children separated from their families and placed in institutions. It later changed its name to Lumos in 2010.
Lumos advocates for family-based care and seeks to end the institutionalization of children worldwide. Its work includes supporting family reunification, community services, education, and alternatives to orphanages and residential institutions.
The name Lumos comes from the Latin word for light and is also familiar to Harry Potter readers as the wand-lighting spell. The charity is not a fictional Hogwarts organization, however; it is a real international nonprofit. Rowling’s charitable activities also include support for other causes, but Lumos is the organization directly associated with this former name.
