J.K. Rowling established the children’s organization Lumos in 2005.
The organization was originally launched as the Children’s High Level Group, following a 2005 article Rowling wrote about children living in institutions. It later became Lumos, a name inspired by the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter stories.
Lumos campaigns to end the institutionalization of children and supports family-based or community-based care. Its work focuses on children who are separated from their families, including those affected by poverty, disability, conflict, and inadequate social services.
The charity’s name is sometimes confused with other British fundraising organizations associated with celebrities. Lumos is specifically linked to Rowling’s campaign for children’s rights and family-based care.
