J.K. Rowling launched Pottermore in 2011 as an interactive Harry Potter website.
Pottermore was announced in June 2011 and opened to the public in April 2012 after an earlier period of limited access. The site combined reading experiences, interactive activities, artwork, writing by Rowling and digital sales of Harry Potter e-books and audiobooks. Users could be sorted into a Hogwarts house and receive a wand as part of the experience.
The platform was designed to extend the books into a digital environment rather than function only as a conventional author website. Rowling contributed new background material about characters, places and wizarding customs, giving fans information beyond the seven novels.
In 2019, Pottermore was replaced as the main official online destination by WizardingWorld.com, later known as Wizarding World. The change of name explains why some current references use Wizarding World instead of Pottermore, but Pottermore remains the historically correct name for the platform launched in 2011.
