On May 17, 2005, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that a new Super Smash Bros. game was being developed for Nintendo's next console, then known as Revolution and later released as Wii. He also described plans for online play using the system's Wi-Fi capabilities, making the announcement notable beyond the promise of a new sequel.

The announcement surprised Masahiro Sakurai, director of the original Super Smash Bros. and Melee. Sakurai had left HAL Laboratory and had not been told that Nintendo was preparing another entry.
