Which NFL coach led the Green Bay Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowls?
Answer
Vince Lombardi
Answer
Vince Lombardi
Vince Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowls.
Lombardi became Green Bay’s head coach and general manager in 1959, quickly transforming a struggling team into the NFL’s dominant force. His Packers won five league championships in seven seasons, including Super Bowl I after the 1966 season and Super Bowl II after the 1967 season.
Green Bay defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35–10 in Super Bowl I and the Oakland Raiders 33–14 in Super Bowl II. Quarterback Bart Starr was the game’s Most Valuable Player in both contests, but Lombardi’s disciplined system and famous power-running offense defined the team.
A common mix-up is confusing the first two Super Bowls with the Packers’ later championships. Green Bay also won Super Bowls XXXI in 1997 and XLV in 2011, under Mike Holmgren and Mike McCarthy—not Lombardi. The Super Bowl trophy was named the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970, shortly after his death.
