Which Need for Speed game introduced a day-night cycle that affects police behavior?

The story behind the answer

Need for Speed: Heat introduced a day-night cycle in which police behavior changes between daytime and nighttime. Released in 2019 by Ghost Games, Heat places racers in Palm City, a fictionalized version of Miami. Players choose whether to race during the day for Bank or at night to build Rep and increase their Heat multiplier.

The distinction is more than visual. Daytime police generally leave the player alone unless provoked, while nighttime patrols actively look for racers and initiate pursuits. Higher Heat levels bring more aggressive units and tougher escape situations, making nighttime racing a deliberate risk-reward choice.

A common mix-up is confusing Heat’s selectable day/night structure with a purely cosmetic lighting cycle in another racing game. Heat ties the time period directly to progression, event access and police pressure. The player must return to a Garage to safely bank nighttime earnings; getting busted can cost the Rep earned during that night.
