Global VR ported Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 into the series' first arcade installment in 2003.
Hot Pursuit 2 began as a 2002 home-console racing game, but it existed in two notably different versions. EA Black Box developed the PlayStation 2 edition, while EA Seattle handled the GameCube, Xbox, and Windows version. Global VR adapted EA Seattle's version for arcade cabinets.
The arcade release was titled Need for Speed rather than simply Hot Pursuit 2. It translated the console game's exotic-car police chases into a coin-operated format designed for public venues. A later 2004 upgrade, Need for Speed GT, added four cars, faster gameplay, and a Shadow Attack mode in which players challenged recorded best times.
A common mix-up is confusing Global VR, the arcade porting company, with Electronic Arts, the publisher and owner of the Need for Speed series. Sega, Namco, and Raw Thrills were not responsible for this particular adaptation.
