Which musical genre is Bob Marley most associated with?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley is most associated with reggae music.

Reggae developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s from earlier styles including ska and rocksteady, combining a strong offbeat rhythm with bass-heavy grooves and socially conscious lyrics. Marley helped carry the sound from Jamaica to a worldwide audience through his work with the Wailers and his later international solo career.

His songs often connected reggae's musical pulse with Rastafari spirituality, anti-colonial ideas, human rights and calls for unity. Tracks such as “Get Up, Stand Up,” “One Love,” “Redemption Song” and “Jamming” made Marley one of reggae's defining global figures.

Ska, rocksteady and dub are all closely related Jamaican genres, which makes them plausible alternatives. Ska came earlier and is generally faster and more horn-driven; rocksteady followed with a slower feel; dub developed through studio-based remixing and heavy use of echo and reverb. Marley recorded music influenced by these traditions, but the genre most firmly associated with his name is reggae.
