Speedee was the McDonald’s mascot retired when the company adopted the Golden Arches as its main visual symbol.
Speedee was a small chef character used in McDonald’s early branding. His name referred to the restaurant’s emphasis on quick service, a central promise of the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System.
The character appeared in early signs and promotional material before McDonald’s shifted toward the Golden Arches identity. As the arches became more prominent in the early 1960s, Speedee was gradually removed from the company’s principal branding.
Speedee is often confused with Ronald McDonald because both were used as McDonald’s mascots. Ronald, however, was introduced later as a clown character aimed at children. Speedee belongs to the company’s earlier restaurant-service era and is closely linked to the original quick-service concept.
