Mac Tonight starred in McDonald’s 1987 advertising campaign of the same name.
The character was a crescent-moon-headed entertainer who wore sunglasses and sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife.” McDonald’s used the campaign to promote evening dining and encourage customers to visit restaurants at night.
Mac Tonight was visually different from the established McDonaldland characters. The moon head, formal suit, and piano-playing presentation gave the campaign a lounge-style identity that stood apart from Ronald McDonald’s family-oriented advertising.
The campaign became especially memorable because of its music and unusual character design. It is sometimes confused with McDonald’s permanent mascots, but Mac Tonight was primarily a late-1980s promotional advertising character rather than a central member of the long-running McDonaldland cast.
