Chicken McNuggets are the McDonald's menu item introduced nationally in 1983 that became one of the brand's best-known products.
McDonald's tested the bite-sized breaded chicken pieces in selected markets before expanding them across the United States. Their uniform shape, dipping sauces, and child-friendly presentation made them especially effective as a recognizable family-oriented product.
The item was developed with help from food scientist René Arend, who worked on creating a chicken product suitable for large-scale preparation. McDonald's had sought a chicken alternative as consumer interest in poultry grew, and McNuggets helped establish chicken as a major part of the chain's identity alongside hamburgers.
A common mix-up is confusing the national launch with earlier regional testing. The McRib, Big Mac, and Filet-O-Fish are also prominent McDonald's products, but they are different branded menu items with separate histories.
