Piranha Plant was the Mario enemy released as Ultimate’s first extra DLC fighter in January 2019.
Unlike the fighters in the first Fighters Pass, Piranha Plant was a separate bonus character. Players who purchased and registered Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by the promotional deadline could claim it at no additional cost; it was also sold separately afterward. The character became available on January 29, 2019.
Piranha Plant had appeared throughout the Mario series as a recurring obstacle, usually emerging from pipes to bite or spit projectiles. Its inclusion was notable because it was an enemy rather than a conventional Mario hero or villain such as Luigi, Bowser, or Wario.
The character’s moveset turns familiar plant behavior into attacks, including biting, poison, and a long-reaching stalk. It is often confused with the Fire Piranha Plant, a variant that appears in Mario games, but the playable fighter is generally identified simply as Piranha Plant. Joker was the first fighter in Fighters Pass Volume 1, but Piranha Plant arrived before him.
