Which Madden NFL game first used the Frostbite engine?

The story behind the answer

Madden NFL 18 was the first Madden game to use the Frostbite engine. Released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it moved the series from its long-running technology to Frostbite 3, the engine also associated with EA franchises such as Battlefield.

The change was part of a broader modernization of Madden. The game introduced Longshot, the series' first cinematic story mode, and added new presentation and gameplay features. Frostbite helped EA pursue more detailed stadiums, lighting, player models, and broadcast-style visuals, although the engine switch did not completely transform how the game played.

A common mix-up is Madden NFL 17, which immediately preceded the transition and was still built on the older technology. Madden NFL 18 was also notable for being the first main-series installment released only on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, without Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 versions. Later Madden titles continued using Frostbite.
