Which language received a Latin translation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

Latin received a translation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The Latin edition was translated by Peter Needham and published in 2003 under the title Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis. It was followed by a Latin translation of the second Harry Potter novel, Harrius Potter et Camera Secretorum, also translated by Needham.

The translations were created partly as a way to encourage interest in Latin among younger readers. They preserve the plot and characters while adapting names, wordplay and magical terminology into classical language. That makes the editions interesting both as literary translations and as examples of how modern fantasy vocabulary can be handled in Latin.

Latin is sometimes confused with Ancient Greek in trivia questions about unusual Harry Potter editions, because both are classical languages taught in schools. The relevant translation of Philosopher’s Stone, however, is Latin, and its title begins with the Latinized form of Harry Potter’s name: Harrius Potter.
