Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country located entirely in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres.
Its territory lies north of the Equator and east of the prime meridian. At about 2.7 million square kilometers, Kazakhstan is larger than Western Europe and is the ninth-largest country globally by area.
The country occupies the center of Eurasia. Its landscapes include the broad Kazakh Steppe, deserts such as the Kyzylkum, and mountain ranges along its eastern and southeastern edges. The Caspian Sea borders Kazakhstan to the west, but it is an enclosed inland sea, so the country remains landlocked.
This wording distinguishes Kazakhstan from countries whose territories cross a major hemisphere boundary. Mongolia is entirely in the same two hemispheres but is much smaller, while Russia extends across both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
