Austria was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born in Salzburg in 1756.
Mozart was baptized on 28 January 1756 at Salzburg’s St. Rupert’s Cathedral, and his birth is traditionally recorded as occurring the previous day. Salzburg was then part of the independent ecclesiastical state known as the Archbishopric of Salzburg, not the modern Republic of Austria, but it is now Austria’s fourth-largest city.
Mozart showed extraordinary musical ability as a child and toured European courts with his sister Nannerl under the direction of their father, Leopold Mozart. He later worked in Salzburg and Vienna, composing operas, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and sacred works.
A common mix-up places Mozart in Germany because he was a German-speaking composer and the historical Salzburg region belonged to the Holy Roman Empire. His birthplace, however, is Salzburg, Austria.
