Uganda is the landlocked country whose capital is Kampala and whose territory lies partly within the Lake Victoria basin.
Uganda is in East Africa and borders Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Although it has no sea coast, it contains a substantial part of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake by area. The lake is shared with Kenya and Tanzania and drains northward through the Victoria Nile.
Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city, stands on hills north of Lake Victoria. The city became an important administrative and commercial centre during the colonial period and remains the country’s main urban hub.
A common confusion concerns Kenya and Tanzania, which also border Lake Victoria but both have coastlines on the Indian Ocean. Rwanda and Burundi are landlocked Great Lakes countries, yet their capitals are Kigali and Gitega respectively, not Kampala.
