Slovenia contains Lake Bled, a glacial lake famous for the Church of the Mother of God on its small island.
Lake Bled lies in northwestern Slovenia near the Julian Alps. A medieval castle stands on a rocky cliff above the water, while the island church is traditionally reached in a wooden boat called a pletna. Visitors often ring the church’s wishing bell, a custom associated with local legend.
The lake’s island is Slovenia’s only natural island. The site became an important tourist destination during the nineteenth century, especially after the railway connected the wider region with European travel networks. Bled is now one of Slovenia’s best-known landmarks.
Lake Bled is sometimes confused with nearby Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural lake. Bohinj is also in the Julian Alps, but it does not have Bled’s island church and cliff-top castle.
