Uzbekistan is one of only two doubly landlocked countries, along with Liechtenstein.
A doubly landlocked country is surrounded exclusively by other landlocked countries, so reaching an ocean requires crossing at least two international borders. Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked because all five of its neighbours—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan—are themselves landlocked.
Uzbekistan is the only doubly landlocked country in Asia; Liechtenstein is the only one in Europe. The term is sometimes confused with simply being landlocked, but most landlocked countries border at least one country with a coastline.
Uzbekistan became independent in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Its capital, Tashkent, is Central Asia’s largest city and lies in the country’s northeast, near the border with Kazakhstan.
