Zimbabwe is the landlocked country home to the ruins of Great Zimbabwe.

Great Zimbabwe is a monumental stone settlement in the southeastern part of the country, near the town of Masvingo. It was built by ancestors of the Shona-speaking peoples between roughly the 11th and 15th centuries, when the settlement was a major regional center.

The site is especially known for dry-stone walls constructed without mortar. Its most famous structures include the Great Enclosure and the Hill Complex. Archaeological evidence links Great Zimbabwe to long-distance trade in gold, ivory, and other goods with the Indian Ocean world.

The name Zimbabwe is commonly derived from a Shona expression associated with stone houses or revered houses. The ruins became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and are represented by the bird motif on Zimbabwe’s national emblem and flag.
