Malawi is the landlocked country home to Mount Mulanje, a dramatic massif in the country’s southern region.
The Mulanje Massif rises sharply from the surrounding plains near the city of Blantyre. Its highest summit, Sapitwa, reaches about 3,002 metres, making it the highest point in Malawi. The massif is known for granite peaks, forests, waterfalls and hiking routes.
Southern Malawi is also a major tea-growing area, particularly around Thyolo and Mulanje. The mountain’s isolated form has made it an important natural landmark and a subject of local folklore.
Mount Mulanje is sometimes confused with Mount Mulanje’s country neighbours’ highlands, especially Lesotho’s Maloti Mountains. Unlike Lesotho, Malawi is not dominated by a continuous high plateau; its landscape also includes the Rift Valley and Lake Malawi.
