Which landlocked country is entirely within the Alps?

Liechtenstein is the only landlocked country whose entire territory lies within the Alps.

This small Central European principality occupies about 160 square kilometres between Switzerland and Austria. The Rhine Valley forms much of its western lowland, while the eastern side rises into the Rätikon range, part of the Alps.

Liechtenstein is a doubly landlocked country: reaching a sea from it requires crossing at least two other countries. It is also one of the world’s smallest states, but it should not be confused with neighboring Switzerland or Austria, both of which contain substantial Alpine territory without being entirely Alpine.

Vaduz is Liechtenstein’s capital, and the country’s constitutional monarchy is headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein.
